London Marathon 2024 to Pay Tribute to Late Winner, Record Participation Expected
Tributes will be paid to 2023 London Marathon winner Kelvin Kiptum, who tragically passed away in a road accident, as the 2024 edition gears up for a grand event. The marathon, set to see a significant number of participants, is anticipated to witness over 50,000 individuals taking on the iconic route from Greenwich Park to The Mall.
In the elite women’s race, some of the fastest female athletes in history will compete, with a potential world record on the horizon. Athletes like Tigst Assefa, Brigid Kosgei, and Ruth Chepngetich aim to challenge the women’s-only marathon world record. The men’s race features strong contenders like Tamirat Tola and Mosinet Geremew among others.
British athletes such as David Weir and Emile Cairess will look to make their mark in the wheelchair and elite categories respectively. The event will also witness the presence of notable personalities such as Ruth Wilson, Phil Dunster, and Harry Judd, adding to the star-studded lineup of participants.
Over 65,000 registered participants from 158 nations are ready for the marathon, with a diverse group including the oldest participant, 91-year-old David Picksley, and the youngest, 18-year-old William Hamilton. The event is expected to raise substantial funds for various charities, with celebrities and regular runners alike joining in support.
