LOS ANGELES, Feb. 14, 2025 — Warner Bros. has officially announced a sequel to the beloved 1985 film ‘The Goonies,’ with screenwriter Potsy Ponciroli tasked with drafting the screenplay. The exciting news comes nearly 40 years after the original captivated audiences with its adventurous tale.
Producers for the project include legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, along with Amblin Entertainment’s Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario, and Chris Columbus, who penned the original script. Lauren Shuler Donner, known for her work on the X-Men franchise, will serve as executive producer. However, a director has not yet been attached to the sequel, and plot details remain under wraps.
‘The Goonies’ originally followed a group of children in Oregon, led by characters played by Sean Astin and Josh Brolin, as they raced against the nefarious Fratelli family in search of pirate treasure. The film became a cultural touchstone, grossing $125 million worldwide against a modest budget of $19 million. In recognition of its significance, the film was preserved in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2017.
Recently, actor Ke Huy Quan, who starred in the original film, experienced a resurgence in his career with performances in projects like ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once‘ and the Marvel series ‘Loki.’ During a recent reunion event for ‘The Goonies’ cast, Quan expressed his desire for a sequel, stating, “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life. I would love for it to happen.”
Corey Feldman, another original cast member, echoed Quan’s sentiments, saying, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Goonies never say die… There’s hope.” This reunion was particularly notable as it marked the actors coming together for the first time in decades, excluding a virtual meeting in 2020.
Over the years, fans have speculated about the possibility of a sequel, a notion that has gained traction recently. Feldman noted that he and Astin had previously pitched ideas to director Richard Donner and the creative team at Amblin, although financial constraints delayed progress. However, with renewed interest and the original cast’s enthusiasm, the project appears to finally be on the move.
Although the details of the sequel remain scarce, the nostalgia surrounding ‘The Goonies’ continues to inspire excitement among fans. Given its iconic status, many are eager to see how the beloved characters have evolved and what new adventures await them in this long-awaited follow-up.
