Amber Haigh was a 19-year-old new mother from New South Wales‘ Riverina region who disappeared without a trace in June 2002, leaving her family and friends with unanswered questions for more than two decades. Despite exhaustive investigations, her whereabouts remain unknown, and there is no evidence that she has ever attempted to contact her family or access vital services and accounts since her disappearance.

Recently, Robert Samuel Geeves and his wife, Anne Margaret Geeves, both 64, were acquitted of Haigh’s murder after a lengthy trial in the NSW Supreme Court. Justice Julia Lonergan ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove their alleged motive, which was said to be the desire to take custody of Haigh’s infant son. The couple had always maintained their innocence, claiming they last saw Haigh when they dropped her at a train station to visit her dying father.

In her summary, Justice Lonergan commented on the disruption and disadvantage in Haigh’s short life, highlighting the abuse and lack of unconditional love she received from those she trusted. Despite evidence suggesting Haigh was a vulnerable young woman susceptible to manipulation, the verdict pointed to the lack of solid evidence against the Geeveses.

The case centered on whether the Geeveses manipulated Haigh into having a child and then killed her to gain custody. However, the court found no compelling evidence of the couple’s desire to have another child at the time Haigh was pregnant. Justice Lonergan also criticized the initial police investigation for focusing more on disproving the Geeveses’ account rather than objectively exploring other possibilities.

The prosecution’s case included prior allegations against Robert Geeves, portraying him as manipulative and violent, but the judge emphasized that these previous acquittals should not influence the character judgment in this case. Further, the judge found fault in critical witness accounts and the lack of exploration into other suspects.

Despite the acquittal, there was significant emotion and disappointment from Haigh’s family, who continue to search for closure about her fate. The outcome left many questions unresolved, including the exact circumstances of Haigh’s disappearance or possible death, having impacted the lives of her family and the community profoundly over the years.
