Maryville Gas Valves Tampering Incident

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Police arrested a man for tampering with gas valves on Monday afternoon, according to officials with the Maryville Police Department.

Officers responded after a suspect was spotted running from a natural gas connection near Celtic Drive. He allegedly opened valves to the gas line, prompting immediate police action. The man was taken into custody without incident.

“There was a brief closure of the northbound lanes of the 129 bypass in an abundance of caution while responders entered the facility to shut off the valves,” Maryville officials stated. This precaution was taken seriously due to the potential danger posed by the gas.

The incident led to the evacuation of 19 businesses and approximately 430 residents in the area as a safety measure. Emergency personnel acted swiftly to ensure the safety of the community.

Two natural gas companies, alongside fire and police crews, responded to the situation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the event.

The Maryville Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
