Mekhi Becton Criticizes MetLife Stadium’s Turf and Conditions Ahead of Eagles-Giants Matchup
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Eagles‘ starting right guard, Mekhi Becton, did not hide his displeasure with MetLife Stadium when discussing his upcoming visit for the game against the New York Giants. The former New York Jets player openly criticized the stadium where he spent the first part of his career, citing numerous issues with the playing conditions.
Becton, who was drafted by the New York Jets in 2020, expressed his sentiments candidly. “I don’t wanna play in that stadium,” Becton stated in an interview with CBS Sports‘ Jeff Kerr. “It’s bad. Everything is just bad about that stadium. I don’t really like it. I’m just glad I only gotta do it one time a year. Just gotta go in there, do my part, and go home.”
The turf at MetLife Stadium has been a point of contention for Becton, who remarked on the stark contrast between it and other NFL turfs. “You can just tell the difference if you was to get on that turf and then go on a different turf,” Becton explained. “You can tell. It’s a night and day difference in turf. It just feels lifted. There’s a lot of things that doesn’t feel right about that turf.”
Throughout his tenure with the Jets, Becton experienced injuries, though none occurred on the MetLife Stadium turf. Still, his views on the artificial surface are firm. “MetLife Stadium actually changed the turf surface during my time there,” Becton noted. “It didn’t make a difference.”
MetLife Stadium is slated to install a grass field in preparation for hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. Becton questioned the delay in transitioning to grass. “I never been told why,” he said. “I just don’t understand why if you have an outdoor stadium, why not just have grass. It just don’t make sense to me.”
The upcoming game is also significant for another former New York player, Eagles’ star Saquon Barkley, who will face the Giants. “I know he’s excited,” Becton commented. “We both know what New York meant to us and we both know how New York did us.”
Becton also managed a smile when the current state of the Jets, who are dealing with issues from a poor season start to management changes, was mentioned. “No comment. That’s what I’ll say on that,” Becton added.
