Mets Dominate Dodgers with Alonso’s Power in 6-1 Win

LOS ANGELES, California — The New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 on Wednesday night, thanks to Pete Alonso, who homered twice and drove in five runs. The Mets’ dominant performance came after splitting a pair of games in the series that went into extra innings.
Alonso set the tone early with a two-run home run in the first inning, propelling the Mets to a 3-0 lead. He added a three-run blast in the eighth inning, smashing his 14th homer of the season 447 feet to nearly the top of the left-field pavilion.
Mets pitcher Griffin Canning earned his first win since May 5, allowing three hits over six innings while striking out seven and walking one. Canning’s strong performance helped keep the MLB’s highest-scoring offense from crossing the plate until the ninth inning.
The Dodgers struggled offensively, with their top hitters falling flat. The No. 2 through 5 hitters combined for an 0-for-15 performance at the plate, with only one walk as they faced Canning and the Mets’ bullpen.
In a bizarre moment during the game, a shirtless man jumped onto the field during Alonso’s at-bat in the eighth inning. He was quickly pursued and tackled by security near the warning track.
The Dodgers’ lone run came in the ninth inning when James Outman hit a homer off José Castillo. Starter Tony Gonsolin lasted five innings, giving up three runs – two earned – striking out six and walking three.
The Mets will send left-hander David Peterson to the mound for Thursday’s series finale against Dodgers’ right-hander Ryan Pepiot.
