Pete Alonso Powers Mets Past Cardinals in 9-3 Victory

ST. LOUIS — Pete Alonso continued his strong performance this season, leading the New York Mets to a 9-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. The win marked the Mets’ ninth consecutive victory against the Cardinals.
After earning the NL Player of the Month award for March and April, Alonso showed his skills with a pivotal two-run home run in the fifth inning. This blast helped the Mets end a two-game losing streak and showcased Alonso’s successful return at the plate, as he now has eight home runs this season.
<p"It’s a long season, but it’s a good month for me,” Alonso said. “I just want to keep this up and keep doing what I can to help win games.”
The Mets offense exploded for 17 hits during the game, with Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Alvarez each contributing three hits. Nimmo also hit a solo home run in the seventh inning and reached base five times overall.
“Alonso is so deserving of that Player of the Month award,” Nimmo remarked. “It’s just another exclamation point on all the work he did in the offseason. He’s in an amazing spot.”
Starting pitcher Clay Holmes earned the win after allowing three earned runs over six innings. Despite a rough start, where he allowed an early run from Masyn Winn’s RBI single, he settled in and retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced.
Holmes commented on his adjustment back to the starting role after not starting since 2018, saying, “It’s starting to become a little bit more natural. I’m starting to feel more like a starter.”
In addition to Alonso’s homer, the Mets rallied effectively in the second inning, taking the lead with a series of hits including an RBI fielder’s choice from Alvarez. The Cardinals briefly led 3-2 before Alonso’s fifth-inning homer reversed their fortunes.
As the game progressed, the Mets padded their lead with additional runs from Nimmo and Alvarez, ultimately sealing the victory with a sacrifice fly from Luisangel Acuña in the ninth inning.
“We know the power is there,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said about Alonso. “He’s not missing pitches now, which is great to see.”
