Minnesota Vikings Part Ways with Kirk Cousins as QB Signs with Atlanta Falcons
The Minnesota Vikings have officially ended their six-year partnership with quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has agreed to sign a four-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, as confirmed by his agent on Monday.
Cousins, a free agent, had been a key player for the Vikings since joining them in 2018 after a successful tenure with the Washington Football Team.
The Vikings will now be on the hunt for a new starting quarterback, a position they have not had to fill since 2018, marking a significant change for the team.
Among the current options on the Vikings’ roster are Jaren Hall and Nick Mullens, although their performances in limited starts last season have raised questions about their ability to lead the team.
With the 11th pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Vikings could explore adding a top young prospect like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or Jayden Daniels, although they may also look to the veteran QB market for experience.
The departure of Cousins leaves the door open for other quarterbacks in free agency, including notable names such as Baker Mayfield, Ryan Tannehill, Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew, and even Russell Wilson, who was recently released by the Denver Broncos.
Vikings General Manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, expressed appreciation for Cousins’ contributions to the team and the Minneapolis-St. Paul community, highlighting the quarterback’s impact during his time with the franchise.
During his tenure with the Vikings, Cousins amassed impressive statistics, ranking third in franchise history for passing yardage and second in passing touchdowns.
Cousins, who played under a fully guaranteed three-year contract with the Vikings, was known for his durability, with the 2023 season being the only one where he missed significant playing time due to an Achilles injury.
