Mumbai and Maharashtra Set for Intense Ranji Trophy Derby
The eagerly anticipated Maharashtrian derby between Mumbai and Maharashtra is set to take place on Friday at a new venue, the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy Ground. This match marks the 65th meeting in the prestigious Ranji Trophy competition between these traditional rivals.
Mumbai, under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane, is looking to rebound from an earlier season defeat against Baroda. The defending champions will be buoyed by the return of Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20 International captain, who is set to play his first Ranji match in two years. Yadav last played at this venue two Decembers ago, when Mumbai faced a defeat against Saurashtra.
Speaking to the press, Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur expressed confidence in Yadav’s ability to strengthen the host team’s batting order. “He should just go out there and express himself. He is experienced enough to take on any attack in the world,” Thakur commented, emphasizing the impact Yadav is expected to have on the game.
Maharashtra, guided by the new coach-captain duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sulakshan Kulkarni, faces a challenge after conceding an innings lead to Jammu and Kashmir last week. Selecting the right combination and adapting to the fresh pitch conditions will be crucial factors for the team.
The vibrant rivalry is well acknowledged by both teams. “It’s a Maharashtrian Derby, so there will be some moments in the game where that rivalry will be seen,” Thakur added, highlighting the competitive spirit expected on the field.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s head coach Sulakshan Kulkarni remarked on the opportunity for his team to learn from the formidable Mumbai side. “Whatever you say, Mumbai is Mumbai, and Maharashtra will learn something from them,” said Kulkarni, reflecting on Mumbai’s storied cricket legacy.
