Noussair Mazraoui Starts in Surprising No.10 Role for Manchester United Against Fenerbahce
In a surprising tactical move, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has started Noussair Mazraoui in the No.10 position against Fenerbahce in their Europa League match. This decision comes as a result of the suspension of captain Bruno Fernandes and various injuries within the squad.
Mazraoui, who joined Manchester United from Bayern Munich for £13m and has been a regular starter at right-back, was handed this new role due to the team’s current personnel issues. Ten Hag explained that Mazraoui’s versatility and experience in playing in half spaces make him capable of fulfilling the attacking midfielder role.
The Red Devils face a challenging task against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, especially with key players like Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Mason Mount absent due to injuries. Ten Hag made four changes to his side, including the inclusion of Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, and Victor Lindelof, in addition to Mazraoui’s role change.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Ten Hag justified the decision by highlighting the need for consistency in the team’s setup and Mazraoui’s past experience in similar roles during his time at Ajax. Ten Hag emphasized that Mazraoui is capable of performing well in the No.10 position and can adapt to the team’s needs during the game.
