Usman Nurmagomedov Vs Paul Hughes Mma Fight

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The Professional Fighters League (PFL) launched its 2025 season with the Road to Dubai Champions Series, headlined by a highly anticipated lightweight title defense between undefeated Bellator champion Usman Nurmagomedov and rising Irish star Paul Hughes. The event, held Saturday at Coca-Cola Arena, streamed live on MAX and DAZN.

Nurmagomedov (18-0, 1 NC), hailing from Dagestan, Russia, entered the fight as the reigning Bellator Lightweight Champion. Trained by his cousin, former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, and coach Javier Mendez at the American Kickboxing Academy, Usman aimed to honor the legacy of his late uncle Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, a legendary MMA coach. His opponent, Hughes (13-1), carried a seven-fight win streak and sought to elevate Irish MMA on the global stage.

The co-main event featured a heavyweight clash between Vadim Nemkov (18-2, 1 NC) and Tim Johnson (18-10). Nemkov, a protégé of MMA icon Fedor Emelianenko, faced Johnson, a veteran stepping in on short notice, in a battle of contrasting styles and experience.

The fight card also included a featherweight bout between Akhmed Magomedov (10-1, 1 NC) and Nathan Kelly (11-2), as well as a bantamweight showdown between undefeated Renat Khavalov (8-0) and Cleiver Fernandes (9-1). The event showcased a mix of established stars and rising talent, with fighters from Russia, Ireland, South Africa, and the Middle East.

Both Nurmagomedov and Hughes successfully made weight during Friday’s weigh-ins, ensuring the main event would proceed as scheduled. The fight marked the latest chapter in the storied Ireland vs. Dagestan rivalry, with Hughes looking to dethrone the dominant Nurmagomedov and claim the lightweight title.

“This fight is more than a title defense—it’s about legacy,” said Usman Nurmagomedov during the pre-fight press conference. “I carry the teachings of my uncle and the pride of Dagestan into this cage.”

Hughes, known as “Big News,” expressed confidence in his preparation. “I’ve worked tirelessly for this moment,” he said. “This is my chance to show the world what Irish MMA is all about.”

The PFL Road to Dubai Champions Series also featured an amateur lightweight bout between Saeed Alhosani (4-2) and Talal Alqallaf (2-0), highlighting the league’s commitment to developing local talent. The event drew a global audience, with fans tuning in to witness one of the most stacked cards of the year.
