Opposition Divided on Voting Process for Lok Sabha Speaker Election: TMC and Congress Express Divergent Views
Opposition parties Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Congress exhibited conflicting opinions on the procedure for the Lok Sabha Speaker election on Wednesday. TMC spokesperson Abhishek Banerjee stated that despite several opposition members requesting a division of votes, the pro-tem speaker did not allow it during the election for the Speaker.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh maintained that the INDIA bloc did not demand a division of votes in the Speaker’s election. Ramesh emphasized the importance of consensus and cooperation, choosing not to press for a division even after their candidate, Kodikunnil Suresh, was proposed.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, Om Birla, secured the position of Speaker following a motion moved by PM Narendra Modi that was approved through a voice vote. Pro-tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab declared the result after the opposition did not insist on a vote count.
Abhishek Banerjee criticized the ruling BJP, alleging that they lack the necessary numbers to govern lawfully. He denounced the government’s actions as illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional, predicting their imminent defeat based on the public’s disenchantment.
On the other hand, Jairam Ramesh praised the opposition’s decision to avoid a division of votes, opting for a unified approach. He highlighted the absence of cooperation and consensus in the ruling BJP’s conduct, contrasting it with the INDIA parties’ commitment to parliamentary harmony.
Amid initial uncertainty over TMC’s support for Congress’ nominee, Suresh, a late-night conversation between Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee reportedly solidified TMC’s backing. TMC revealed a lack of consultation by Congress prior to Suresh’s nomination.
