Brandon Young Orioles Pitching

BALTIMORE, MD — The Baltimore Orioles recalled right-hander Brandon Young from Triple-A Norfolk earlier today to start against the Texas Rangers. Interim manager Tony Mansolino confirmed the move after a 6-5 loss to the Rangers on Tuesday night.

This will mark Young’s third major league start. He struggled in his previous outings, allowing six runs and 11 hits over 8 2/3 innings this season, while sporting a 6.23 ERA and 2.192 WHIP. Despite this, MLB Pipeline lists him as the organization’s No. 19 prospect.

Young performed well during his time in the minors, compiling a 2-1 record with a 2.70 ERA and 0.841 WHIP in five starts with the Tides. He struck out 27 batters while allowing only four walks.

The Orioles also made a corresponding move by optioning reliever Yaramil Hiraldo back to Norfolk. Hiraldo did not pitch in the three games since being recalled on Sunday.

Jordan Westburg returns to the lineup, playing third base, while Gary Sánchez will serve as the designated hitter. Colton Cowser will be in left field, and Dylan Carlson will play right. Ramón Laureano will be available off the bench, where he has excelled this season, hitting .583 when ahead in the count.

The Orioles are looking to win their seventh series of the season, but they are 3-9 in rubber games and sit 7.5 games behind for the last Wild Card. Young’s matchup comes against two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, who has recorded a 2.24 ERA this season.

“We need to find the right mix on the mound,” Mansolino said. “Brandon’s been great in the minors, and we’re eager to see what he can do here.” His previous outings show promise, with potential for him to reclaim a spot within a shaky Orioles rotation.

The Orioles are still dealing with injuries, as infielder Jorge Mateo begins a rehab assignment in Triple-A Norfolk, still recovering from left elbow inflammation. Mansolino expressed a desire for Mateo to have a lengthy rehab to regain his rhythm.
