Ovechkin Scores 891st Goal, Closing in on Gretzky’s Record

BOSTON — Alex Ovechkin scored his 891st career goal on Tuesday night, leaving him just three goals shy of tying Wayne Gretzky‘s NHL record for all-time goals, as the Washington Capitals claimed a 4-3 victory against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.
The Capitals captain opened the scoring late in the first period, converting a pass from Dylan Strome during a power play to extend Washington’s lead to 2-0. With this goal, Ovechkin continues his charge toward Gretzky’s long-standing record as he has averaged nearly two goals every three games in his last 18 match-ups.
“It’s getting close,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said after the game. “You can feel it.”
Ovechkin, 39, initially faced challenges this season, missing 16 games due to a broken leg. However, his return in December has reignited his scoring prowess. He has tallied 12 goals in his last 18 games, now with eight remaining in the regular season to match Gretzky’s mark.
Citing the optimistic mindset of the team, goaltender Charlie Lindgren remarked, “Anything’s possible with Alex Ovechkin. We’ve got eight games to go, and the best thing about it is it doesn’t feel like there’s any pressure at all. And the team’s enjoying it.”
Tuesday’s game also marked a significant night for Ryan Leonard, who made his NHL debut. Leonard played alongside Ovechkin, witnessing firsthand the thrill of a record pursuit. “It’s just really cool and just trying to embrace the moment,” he said.
The Capitals secured their first win in four games, snapping a three-game losing streak as Ovechkin’s effort was complemented by goals from Nic Dowd, Strome, and Tom Wilson. Lindgren contributed with 21 saves to hold off a persistent Bruins squad.
The Bruins fought back after being down 2-0, with goals from Vinni Lettieri and David Pastrnak tying the game in the second period. However, a quick response from Strome, who scored midway through the third, gave Washington the edge they needed.
“I liked our first period but the second wasn’t great,” Carbery reflected. “We dug in the third and found the win.”
Despite the victory, the Bruins have been struggling, suffering their ninth consecutive loss and evening their playoff hopes. They remain in a tough spot as they look to regroup going forward.
As Ovechkin eyes history, he expressed gratitude for the support he has received. After tapping in his goal, he said, “A goal is a goal. It was a great play by Stromer and Carly.” With focus shifting to their next game against the Carolina Hurricanes, it’s clear that Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzky’s goal record will be a story to watch in this closing segment of the season.
The Capitals are now in a solid position in the Eastern Conference and aim to maintain their momentum as they move forward.
