Perth Smoke Haze

Residents of Perth, Australia, are experiencing significant smoke and ash fallout, transforming the city’s typically sunny spring skies into a thick, smoky grey. This development is the result of prescribed burns carried out on the city’s outskirts, which triggered the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to issue a smoke alert for both the metropolitan area and adjacent Perth Hills earlier on Wednesday.

Prescribed burns have been conducted east of Bedfordale, north of Guilderton, north of Boddington, and on private property, contributing to the haze enveloping the city. According to reports received by 7NEWS.com.au, there appears to be no other emergency contributing to the smoke-filled atmosphere.

Residents have expressed their concerns and discomfort, with one individual reporting ash falling southeast of the city and stating, “I know prescribed burns are necessary, but this is awful.” Other comments describe the scene resembling “Armageddon”, with one person describing it as “wretched burn-off smoke killing me”.

The widespread haze has prompted Main Roads WA to advise drivers traveling on Roe Highway near Kenwick Link in Beckenham to use their vehicle lights and allow extra distance for braking. Another resident commented online lamenting that a “beautiful sunny day” had been marred by the smoke, claiming it had blanket-covered the entire city.

The DFES assured the public that the smoke is expected to dissipate throughout the evening and overnight, aided by south-easterly winds. In the interim, they have advised individuals to keep doors and windows shut and to turn off air-conditioners. “People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses should follow their pre-prepared treatment plan,” stated DFES.

Drivers are also urged to exercise caution while navigating affected areas, ensuring safety despite the reduced visibility caused by the smoke haze.
