Peter Obi Urges Caution in Handling NLC President’s Summons
Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has called on the Federal Government to approach the allegations made against Joe Ajaero, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), with extreme caution.
This comes in light of Ajaero’s recent summons by the police for questioning regarding serious allegations, including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.
Obi expressed his concerns in a statement shared on his official social media account, noting that such invitations should not be surprising given the critical position Ajaero holds.
He also highlighted the gravity of the allegations, mentioning that there is a lack of clarity surrounding the circumstances of these claims. Additionally, Obi raised questions about whether the authorities are framing these accusations in terms of Ajaero’s personal conduct or his responsibilities as the NLC leader.
Obi emphasized the need for extreme caution in handling this sensitive issue, warning against potential autocratic methods that could undermine the labour force as an opposition entity.
Invitations like the one directed at Ajaero are expected, he asserted, but he insisted that the rule of law and evidence should be upheld. He urged labour to leverage its strengths to maintain democratic order.
