Peter Obi is a Nigerian businessman and politician who served as the Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014. He is the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 Nigerian general election.
Early Life and Education
Peter Obi was born on July 19, 1961, in Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria. He is the eldest of seven children. Obi attended Christ the King College, Onitsha, where he completed his secondary education in 1978. He then proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he studied Philosophy and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984.
Peter Obi began his career as a trader in the early 1980s. He later worked as a banker at Fidelity Bank and Guaranty Trust Bank. In 1999, Obi was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In 2003, Obi was elected Governor of Anambra State on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He was impeached by the Anambra State House of Assembly in 2006, but he was reinstated by the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2007. Obi served as Governor of Anambra State for two terms, from 2006 to 2014.
As Governor of Anambra State, Obi implemented a number of reforms, including the improvement of infrastructure, the promotion of education, and the fight against corruption. He is also credited with reducing the debt of Anambra State by over 90%.
In 2019, Obi was the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 Nigerian general election. He and his running mate, Atiku Abubakar, lost the election to Muhammadu Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo.
