Atiku Abubakar is a Nigerian politician and businessman who served as the Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. He is the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 Nigerian general election.

Early Life and Education

Atiku Abubakar was born on November 25, 1946, in Jada, Adamawa State, Nigeria. He attended the Jada Primary School from 1954 to 1960 and the Adamawa Provincial Secondary School from 1960 to 1965. He then proceeded to the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied Law and graduated with a Diploma in Law in 1967.

Atiku Abubakar also holds a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from the Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Career

Atiku Abubakar began his career as a Customs Officer in 1969. He rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Customs Service to become the Deputy Director of the Department of Customs and Excise in 1993.

In 1995, Atiku Abubakar resigned from the Nigerian Customs Service to join politics. He was elected Governor of Adamawa State in 1999. He served as Governor for only two years before being elected Vice President of Nigeria in 1999.

As Vice President, Atiku Abubakar played a key role in the economic reforms of the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo. He also oversaw the privatization of several state-owned enterprises.

In 2007, Atiku Abubakar ran for President of Nigeria on the platform of the Action Congress (AC). However, he lost the election to Umaru Yar‘Adua.

Atiku Abubakar has been a vocal critic of the administrations of Umaru Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan. He has also been critical of the current administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
