Philadelphia 76ers sign Caleb Martin and waive Paul Reed in roster shakeup
The Philadelphia 76ers have made a significant move in their roster by signing veteran wing Caleb Martin to a four-year, $32 million deal while also waiving Paul Reed in a roster shakeup.
ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski and Michael Scotto of HoopsHype were the first to report the Sixers‘ acquisition of Martin from the Miami Heat.
Martin, known for his battle-tested experience and versatility, brings a new dynamic to the Sixers’ lineup with his ability to play multiple positions on the court.
During his time with the Charlotte Hornets and later the Miami Heat, Martin has shown consistent growth in his game, showcasing a career-best average of 10.0 points per game in the past season.
His impact in the postseason has been particularly noteworthy, with standout performances in the Eastern Conference Finals where he averaged 19.3 points over seven games.
Aside from his offensive abilities, Martin’s defensive versatility, being able to guard positions one through four, adds a valuable asset to the Sixers’ defensive lineup.
At 28 years old, Martin, who started his college career at NC State before transferring to Nevada, brings a wealth of experience to the young Sixers squad.
As the Sixers welcome Martin into their ranks, they bid farewell to Paul Reed, a DePaul standout who had made significant contributions to the team in the past season.
Reed, a G League success story, went from being the third-to-last pick in the 2020 NBA Draft to securing a spot in the Sixers’ main roster and even earning the G League Rookie of the Year and MVP titles.
Following a challenging season in 2023-24, the clause in Reed’s contract that made his salary non-guaranteed provided the Sixers with the flexibility to make moves in their roster.
All the reported transactions, including the pending agreement with Paul George, are set to be finalized at 12:01 p.m. on Saturday, marking a new chapter in the Philadelphia 76ers’ lineup for the upcoming season.
With the addition of Martin and potential signings to follow, the Sixers are gearing up for a competitive season ahead with a revamped roster.
