Pittsburgh International Airport’s New Terminal Set to Open Next Week
FINDLAY TOWNSHIP, PA — Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is preparing to open its new terminal on Tuesday, Nov. 18, just in time for the busy Thanksgiving travel season. This modern facility comes after a $1.7 billion investment and is set to enhance the traveling experience.
The new terminal, which broke ground in October 2021, integrates ticketing, security, baggage claim, shops, restaurants, and airline gates into a single complex. Airport officials describe the design as one that ‘right sizes’ the space to meet current air travel demands in Pittsburgh.
‘This is a new day for our region. This is an airport built for Pittsburgh, by Pittsburgh,’ said Christina Cassotis, CEO of Pittsburgh International Airport. ‘It improves the passenger experience and ensures this region remains on a global stage.’
The older terminal, in operation for 33 years, was originally designed as a hub for US Airways. Following the airline’s withdrawal in 2004, PIT transitioned to an origin-destination airport, with current annual passenger numbers at around 10 million. The new terminal is expected to cut in half the time it takes for passengers to reach their gates, eliminating the need for the current half-mile tram that connects landside and airside terminals.
In addition to improved functionality, the new facility offers outdoor terraces filled with native plants, pathways, and benches—though not all outdoor spaces will be completed by opening day. Parking may also be more manageable, with passengers encouraged to book in advance at ParkatPIT.com starting Nov. 14, allowing for better pricing options.
The Allegheny County Airport Authority has also introduced a new navigation program that combines human support with AI technology to provide real-time assistance for travelers. Prior to the official opening, officials held two trials to test the terminal and its baggage system.
The transition from the old terminal to the new one will officially begin Monday, with the grand opening taking place the following day.
