Playstation Portal Cloud Gaming Update

Sony has announced a significant update for the PlayStation Portal, a handheld device that was initially launched as a peripheral for the PS5. The latest update introduces cloud gaming support in beta, allowing PlayStation Plus Premium members to stream select PS5 games directly from the cloud without the need for a PS5 console.

This new feature marks a substantial expansion of the PlayStation Portal’s capabilities, transforming it from a device that could only stream games from a connected PS5 within the same network, to one that can access games over the internet. Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalogue will be available during the beta period, including titles like Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

To utilize this feature, users must have a stable internet connection, with Sony recommending a minimum of 7 Mbps for 720p streaming and 13 Mbps for 1080p streaming at 60fps. The update also supports major DualSense wireless controller features and cloud-based saves, although some features like Game Trials, Party voice chat, and in-game commerce are currently unavailable during the beta phase.

The update is available in select countries, including the UK and the US, and can be accessed by updating the PS Portal and navigating to the Quick Menu > Settings > Cloud Streaming (Beta) to enable the feature. This development makes the PlayStation Portal more appealing, especially for those who prefer handheld gaming and do not need to purchase a PS5 to access PS5 games.

However, it is important to note that this service is currently limited to streaming PS5 games, with PS4 and PS3 games not supported at this time. The beta period will allow Sony to refine the cloud streaming experience before a full rollout.
