Public Memorial for NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo Set for May 31

ATLANTA, GA — The family of NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo is hosting a public memorial to honor his remarkable life and legacy at Georgia Tech‘s McCamish Pavilion on May 31. The event will begin at 10:30 AM and is free and open to all.

This ‘Celebration of Life’ will feature speeches, heartfelt tributes, and musical performances that celebrate Mutombo’s contributions both on and off the basketball court. Attendees can view video presentations showcasing his distinguished career, his impactful role as an NBA Global Ambassador, and his extensive humanitarian efforts that changed lives worldwide.

“Atlanta has been our home for almost thirty years, and the outpouring of love and support for Dikembe has been overwhelming,” said Rose Mutombo, Dikembe’s wife, in a statement. “In recognition of this incredible community and all the wonderful people who stood alongside Dikembe throughout his journey, we wanted to create a space for everyone to celebrate his life and the profound impact he had in this community and throughout the world.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Mutombo garnered eight All-Star selections and four Defensive Player of the Year awards, becoming an iconic figure in the NBA. His legacy transcends basketball; Mutombo was known for his humanitarian work, focusing on health care and education in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In honor of his impactful work, the Mutombo family has established the Dikembe Mutombo Memorial Fund (DMMF), aimed at ensuring the continuation of his vital projects for years to come. Details on how to contribute to the fund will be available during the memorial.
