University Of Richmond Football Game

Richmond, Va.— The University of Richmond football team defeated Virginia Military Institute (VMI) 38–14 on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Robins Stadium. This marked Richmond’s first home game of the season and a significant victory in their rivalry against the Keydets.

The Spiders showcased an explosive offense, accumulating 541 total yards, including 353 yards on the ground. Head Coach Russ Huesman praised his team’s performance, stating, “Good win, good win. Offensively, I think we did a great job. We generated big plays and our running backs were incredible.”

Running back Andrew King contributed with a career-high 153 yards, including an 83-yard touchdown, while fellow running back Jamaal Brown added 100 yards. Their efforts were pivotal in leading the Spiders to victory. “Our word of the week was relentless,” Brown said. “It doesn’t matter who is on the o-line; when we cross that white line, all the backs are going to eat.”

Richmond struck first, with a 10-play, 75-yard drive ending in a touchdown by running back Aziz Foster-Powell. VMI quickly responded with a touchdown of their own, but the Spiders regained the lead with a long touchdown pass from Kyle Wickersham to Isaiah Dawson, who finished the game as the leading receiver with 99 yards.

The game was interrupted by a storm, causing a 3-hour delay, but upon return, the Spiders quickly answered VMI’s second touchdown with another from Dawson. Richmond’s defense also played a key role, limiting VMI to just 229 total yards, with only 34 on the ground.

This win improves Richmond’s all-time record against VMI to 47-40. The Spiders will next face Howard University at home on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 2:00 p.m., as part of Family Weekend festivities.
