NEW YORK (AP) — The list of nominees for the 2025 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was announced on Wednesday, revealing a diverse mix of 14 performers. Among this year’s nominees are Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, and Phish, with eight artists debuting on the ballot for the first time.
The first-time nominees include Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, and Phish, alongside Checker, who is recognized for his hit “The Twist.” This inclusion marks a significant moment for Latin rock as Maná becomes the first primarily Spanish-speaking artist to receive a nomination.
Other noteworthy nominees making a return to the ballot include iconic acts like Oasis, the White Stripes, Joy Division/New Order, and Soundgarden. The induction ceremony, which is set for a fall date in Los Angeles, will see the winners announced in late April, alongside inductees for special awards, including the Musical Influence and Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Awards.
This year, the list particularly piques interest with Oasis, which is making headlines due to its highly anticipated summer reunion tour after 16 years. “Oasis has had a tumultuous history, and their response to previous nominations was far from favorable,” said John Goehrke, director of fan experience at the Rock Hall. Last year, Liam Gallagher publicly dismissed the Hall, calling it a “load of bollox.”
Chubby Checker, eligible since 1985, has long been a point of contention among fans, who felt his absence from past ballots was a glaring oversight. With Checker now at 83, his potential induction would honor his influence in the genre. “I’m just happy to finally be considered,” Checker commented.
Additionally, Bad Company and the Black Crowes also aim for a resurgence, having undergone significant changes within their lineups in recent years. Cocker’s nomination reflects the Hall’s growing recognition of artists from the 1960s and 70s, amidst a ballot dominated by ’90s acts this year.
According to John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, “This remarkable list of nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors.” The Hall’s mission, he noted, is to celebrate the rich tapestry of rock music across all eras.
Each artist’s eligibility is based on releasing their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to their nomination. This year, 1,200 voters—including artists, historians, and music industry professionals—will decide on the final inductees, evaluating the nominees based on their impact, legacy, and influence within the genre.
The full list of 2025 nominees includes: Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, Maná, Oasis, OutKast, Phish, Soundgarden, and the White Stripes.
