A major security breach during the Euro 2024 Group F match between Portugal and Turkey at Dortmund‘s Westfalenstadion saw several fans invading the pitch to take selfies with star player Ronaldo, disrupting the game on multiple occasions.

Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martinez, expressed serious concern over the incidents, emphasizing the need to prevent such breaches in the future and warning against exposing players to potential risks.

Ronaldo, who now plays for a club in Saudi Arabia, was seen engaging with fans who managed to evade security, posing for selfies before being ushered off the field.

The interruptions forced referee Felix Zwayer to halt the game repeatedly to remove the fans from the pitch, reflecting a significant lapse in security measures.

In total, five fans managed to reach Ronaldo during the match, with some attempting to take selfies and even grabbing the player despite efforts by security to control the situation.

Despite the disturbances, Portugal emerged victorious with a 3-0 win over Turkey, securing their spot in the Euro 2024 last 16 as Group F winners, with goals from Silva, Akaydin (own-goal), and Fernandes sealing the victory.

The incidents will likely trigger a UEFA investigation into security protocols at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, a venue set to host crucial Euro 2024 fixtures, including a round-of-16 match and a semifinal.
