Roof Collapse at Delhi Airport Halts Operations, Causes Injuries and Flight Cancellations

On a rainy Friday morning, a tragic incident unfolded at Delhi Airport as part of the Terminal-1 roof collapsed onto vehicles, resulting in one fatality and six injuries.

Airport operations were temporarily paused post the roof collapse, with check-in counters closed for safety, affecting departure services until 2 pm.

IndiGo Airlines took the decision to cancel all flights to and from Terminal 1 due to the partial closure caused by heavy rains.

SpiceJet also announced flight cancellations as Terminal 1 operations remained partially suspended until further notice.

The unexpected situation led to disruptions across the network, prompting both airlines to advise passengers to stay updated on their flight statuses before heading to the airport.

Affected by the closure of Terminal 1, IndiGo flights were redirected to Terminals 2 and 3, while SpiceJet’s operations were shifted entirely to Terminal 3.

Due to heavy rainfall, Yashobhoomi Dwarka Sector 25 Metro station’s entry and exit points were shut down by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The shuttle service from Aerocity Metro station to Terminal 1-IGI Airport was also temporarily halted.

Damaged vehicles, including taxis, littered the area as Delhi Fire Services conducted a search operation to confirm no individuals were trapped post the roof collapse at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Delhi airport released an official statement attributing the roof collapse to heavy rainfall, which injured individuals were receiving medical assistance for while departures from Terminal 1 remained suspended.

Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu assured that rescue operations were underway, with the injured carefully transported to hospitals.

Heavy rainfall continued to afflict Delhi and its neighboring areas, causing waterlogging and significant disruptions, with authorities vigilant and urging residents to stay indoors.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted ongoing rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in Delhi for the next week, with temperatures ranging between 28°C and 36°C.

Various areas, captured by news agency ANI, depicted the inundation and traffic chaos caused by the relentless downpour, highlighting the challenges faced by the capital city.
