Sam Cane 100th Cap

Sam Cane, poised to celebrate his 100th appearance for the All Blacks this Saturday, has shared a touching story of camaraderie from opponents who visited him following a severe injury. Cane, who suffered a broken neck during a match against South Africa at Loftus Versfeld in 2018, recently recounted an unexpected visit from three Springboks players that left a profound impact on him.

“The day after I had surgery, Rassie Erasmus, Francois Louw, and Jesse Kriel, all on separate occasions, made the visit to the hospital,” Cane told reporters. Despite being in a state of disorientation post-surgery, Cane expressed his gratitude for their gestures, which demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship.

At the time of the injury, Cane’s teammates had returned to New Zealand, leaving just the team doctor to aid in his recovery. The visit from the Springboks trio, Cane stated, was something he would never forget and greatly appreciated.

Cane has dealt with various injuries following that incident but has continued to be an integral part of the All Blacks. After assuming the role of captain post the 2019 World Cup, he has been leading the team, including their current journey in the 2023 global tournament. As Cane prepares for his milestone match, he has already signed a long-term contract to continue his career in Japan from 2025.

Reflecting on his journey, Cane remarked on the importance of resilience in rugby, both on and off the field. “When I look back on it… rugby’s a pretty good teacher of life and resilience,” he commented. “The ups and downs, you just have to pick yourself up and carry on.”

Sam Cane will play his 100th test match for the All Blacks at Sky Stadium in Wellington, accompanied by an enthusiastic local crowd. This game will also mark the final home test for both Cane and halfback TJ Perenara before they embark on their careers in Japan.

All Blacks Head Coach Scott Robertson highlighted the significance of this achievement for Cane. Robertson stated, “Sam will be joining an exclusive club of All Black centurions, which is testament to his fortitude and work ethic.”

The team sees several strategic changes as they face Australia in the final game of the Lipovitan-D Rugby Championship. Significant among these are Patrick Tuipulotu‘s return and adjustments in the backline, with Beauden Barrett and Anton Lienert-Brown starting.

The All Blacks look forward to a strong performance against the Wallabies, drawing inspiration from Cane’s resilient journey and significant milestone.
