Visakhapatnam, IndiaSmriti Mandhana broke a long-held record by becoming the first woman to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year during an ICC Women’s World Cup match against Australia on Sunday.

The 29-year-old vice-captain of India began the match needing just 18 runs to reach the milestone. She secured it in style, hitting a six off bowler Sophie Molineux. Mandhana ended the match with 58 runs, making her the quickest player to achieve 5,000 runs in women’s ODIs, accomplishing it in just 112 innings.

<p“Today the pitch was much better as compared to the last game,” Mandhana said. “We needed to get off to a good start and I think Pratika (Rawal) and I did that.”

<pMandhana’s historic achievement surpasses the previous record of 970 runs set by Australia’s Belinda Clark in 1997. This year, Mandhana has surpassed her own expectations with four centuries and three half-centuries in 2025, and she boasts an impressive average of 57.76.

<pDespite Mandhana's outstanding performance, the Indian team faced a setback on Thursday, losing to South Africa by three wickets. They are still hopeful of qualifying for the semi-finals with four league matches remaining in the tournament.

<pWith her total of 1,053 runs in 2025, Mandhana has set a high bar for future cricketers. She has played 18 matches this year, leading the charts for women’s ODIs.

<p“Records are important, but team success is my main focus,” she said. “We still have work to do in this World Cup.”

<pMandhana, who has played 111 matches in her ODI career, continues to be a significant figure in women’s cricket, with 13 centuries to her name, the most by any opener. She plans to keep performing at her best in the remaining matches of the World Cup.
