Sony is preparing to unveil its next-generation gaming console later this year, with leaked specifications shedding light on the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, codenamed Trinity. According to reports from tech outlet The Verge, the PS5 Pro promises upgrades in GPU performance, CPU clock speeds, and advanced rendering capabilities, particularly with ray tracing technology.

The company is said to be pushing developers to leverage enhanced graphics features like ray tracing, with the hope of driving significant advancements in gaming experiences. Games designed for the PS5 Pro may bear a ‘Trinity Enhanced’ label, indicating optimizations for the new hardware. Sony aims to encourage developers to maintain cross-compatibility between the PS5 and PS5 Pro, facilitating performance boosts for the latter.

Expected to deliver a substantial boost in rendering power, the PS5 Pro’s GPU is projected to operate nearly 45% faster than that of the standard PS5. To achieve this, the console will feature a larger GPU that utilizes faster system memory, enabling enhanced ray tracing capabilities. Sony is reportedly implementing an advanced ray tracing architecture in the PS5 Pro, promising up to three times the rendering speed compared to its predecessor.

While the PS5 Pro’s CPU remains consistent with the base model, it will introduce a new clocking mode targeting a frequency of 3.85GHz, marking a 10% improvement over the standard PS5’s CPU speed of 3.5GHz. Additionally, system memory will witness a 28% enhancement, boosting bandwidth to 576GB/s compared to the PS5’s 448GB/s. The PS5 Pro will incorporate PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a feature designed to enhance frame rates and image quality.

Moreover, the PS5 Pro is rumored to rely on AMD compute, offering graphics capabilities akin to the Radeon RX 7800 XT. This hardware configuration enables 4K graphics rendering with up to three times the ray-tracing efficiency and support for 8K resolution output under performance mode. The console’s introduction is anticipated in the holiday season of Q4 2024, with developers reportedly receiving DevKits since September 2023.
