Sophie Turner Stars in New ITV Drama ‘Joan’ Depicting Notorious Jewel Thief
A new drama series titled “Joan,” described as “exhilarating and emotional,” is set to premiere on ITV, featuring Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner. Turner takes on the challenging role of Joan Hannington, a noted figure in London’s criminal underworld during the 1980s, renowned for her jewel thefts.
The series explores the compelling life of Joan Hannington, portraying her as a multifaceted character: a mother, lover, and one of Britain’s most notorious thieves. The narrative is set against the vibrant backdrop of 1980s London, showcasing her remarkable journey from an ordinary life to one filled with high-stakes crimes.
The official synopsis from ITV reveals, “When her partner Gary goes on the run, Joan seizes the chance to start a new life with her six-year-old daughter, Kelly.” Delving deeper into the criminal world, Joan meets Boisie, an enigmatic antiques dealer whose influence leads her to new levels of danger and adventure.
“Through her sharp intelligence, irresistible charm, and talent for impersonation, Joan’s story is a high-stakes game of survival and reinvention,” the synopsis continues. “Every heist and every stolen diamond is driven by her singular purpose: to create a secure future for her daughter.”
The series, directed by Richard Laxton and produced by Ruth Kenley-Letts, will premiere its first episode on Sunday, September 29, followed by the second on Monday, September 30, both airing at 9 pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
Sophie Turner’s portrayal of Joan Hannington is anticipated to bring depth to the character, with the drama offering a closer look at the complex nature of Hannington’s life. Written by Anna Symon, the series is based on Hannington’s real-life experiences as detailed in her 2002 memoir, “I Am What I Am.”
Hannington, born in Acton to Irish parents, endured a difficult upbringing marked by poverty and abuse, leading her to leave home at the age of 13. Her life took a dramatic turn when she married Ray Pavey, a convicted armed robber, at the age of 17.
The series, while dramatized, offers insights into Hannington’s life choices, including her notorious method of swallowing diamonds for theft and her eventual marriage to antiques expert Boisie, portrayed by Frank Dillane. The narrative also touches upon her life of luxury, which was fueled by her criminal activities.
Joan Hannington’s story is a tale of transformation, and her life after crime involved a shift towards legitimate business practices, including property renovation. She currently resides on the South Coast with her family.
Hannington was involved in the production to ensure authenticity, forming a close friendship with Turner. She expressed satisfaction with the portrayal, saying, “I think she’s great, and I think everybody here knows me well enough to know that if I didn’t like it I’d say so.”
Though pleased with the series, Hannington acknowledged the surreal experience of seeing her life depicted onscreen, describing it as “amazing” but also “strange,” given her private nature.
