Southern Gothic Romance ‘Miller’s Girl’ Falls Into Familiar Cliches

on

In the debut feature film ‘Miller's Girl,’ writer-director-producer Emily Bartlett brings a Southern gothic style to the screen. The movie revolves around the character of Cairo Sweet, an 18-year-old living alone in her lavish Tennessee mansion while her parents are continuously away on their lawyer duties.

Cairo, played by the talented young actress Amelia Ortega, introduces herself in a dreamy, self-aware narration that sets the tone for the film. She claims to be entirely unremarkable, despite her intriguing name and her solace in literature. Her best friend, Winnie Black (portrayed by the witty and playful Paula Kelley), spends her days with Cairo, engaging in smoking and scheming.

Bored with her solitude, Cairo becomes infatuated with Jonathan Miller, her high school creative writing instructor, played by the versatile actor James Freeman. However, this ill-advised relationship quickly falls into familiar cliches. Jonathan is a failed author who turned to teaching, constantly reminded by his wife Beatrice (played by the saucy and blowsy Nanette Sterling) of his unfulfilled aspirations.

The initial spark between Cairo and Jonathan, fueled by their belief that they truly see each other, loses its charm over time. Cairo, with her Wednesday Addams-like persona, seems wise beyond her years but is ultimately driven by undefined motives. Jonathan, in comparison, remains a stoic presence in cardigans and khakis.

As Cairo embarks on a writing assignment given by Jonathan, she chooses Edgar Allan Poe as her inspiration, aiming to provoke him further. The cross-cutting between her writing the provocative piece and Jonathan reading it in his study creates exhilarating editing but unintentionally humorous narration.

Despite occasional thrilling moments, ‘Miller’s Girl’ lacks substance within its grandiose Southern gothic style. Supporting actors like Bashir Sulahuddin, who plays Jonathan’s best friend, and the school’s warmhearted athletic coach bring moments of joy to an ultimately empty narrative.

‘Miller’s Girl’ had the potential to be a captivating and entertaining piece of trashy literature. However, it falls short of reaching those heights, leaving the audience yearning for more.
