Southern Manitoba Hit by Winter Storm, Causing Highway Closures

Published

on

Residents of Manitoba, especially in southern areas, are grappling with a severe winter storm that has led to the closure of highways due to heavy snowfall. The storm, predicted by Environment Canada, brought 10 to 20 centimeters of snow and prompted the shutdown of major roadways in the region. Areas such as Winnipeg and Brandon were significantly affected, with visibility reducing to almost zero in some locations.

The impact was particularly felt on Highway 1, where more than 170 kilometers were closed off to traffic, causing disruptions in travel. The closures between Brandon and the Saskatchewan border compounded the challenge for commuters. Additional road segments in southwestern Manitoba were also shut down due to dangerous driving conditions caused by the snowstorm.

Authorities urged drivers to remain vigilant and follow updates on road conditions to ensure safety. The City of Winnipeg activated snowplow crews to address the situation promptly. Furthermore, a winter parking ban remained in effect to facilitate snow-clearing operations and maintain order on designated winter streets.

The adverse weather not only affected transportation but also impacted community health services. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) warned of potential delays or cancellations in home care services as a result of the snowstorm. Efforts were being made to mitigate disruptions, but some service adjustments were deemed inevitable.

Meanwhile, in Brandon, the local school division announced the closure of several schools and adjustments to bus routes due to the challenging weather conditions. The division advised residents to expect delays and exercise caution when commuting within the city limits. Parental discretion was advised regarding school attendance for students facing travel difficulties.

As Environment Canada forecasts an improvement in conditions the following day, residents are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to safety protocols during this period of intense winter weather.
