Sri Lanka Vs West Indies T20 Dambulla 2024

Sri Lanka emerged victorious over the West Indies in the second T20 International match held in Dambulla, with a significant margin of 73 runs. This triumph marks Sri Lanka’s largest T20 victory against the Caribbean team, positioning them for a potential series win in the upcoming decider.

Having won the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bat first and set a competitive target of 162 runs. The foundation of this total was built on a solid opening partnership of 72 runs between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. Pathum Nissanka’s innings was particularly notable, as he top-scored with 54 runs off 49 balls, including nine boundaries and a six.

On the bowling front, Sri Lanka’s spin attack proved decisive, crippling the West Indies batting lineup. Debutant Dunith Wellalage was the standout performer, securing impressive figures of 3 wickets for just 9 runs. In support, Maheesh Theekshana, Charith Asalanka, and Wanindu Hasaranga each claimed two wickets, effectively utilizing the spinning conditions of the pitch.

The West Indies struggled to counter Sri Lanka’s spin-heavy strategy, losing wickets at regular intervals. The team found themselves faltering at 21 for 3 by the close of the powerplay, ultimately being bowled out for a mere 89 runs in 16.1 overs. This performance marks the West Indies’ lowest T20 score against Sri Lanka and their sixth lowest in T20 International matches.

Despite economic bowling efforts from spinners Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase, who conceded only 37 runs in their combined eight overs, the West Indies bowling attack could not contain the Sri Lankan batsmen. The decision to field only two spinners may have contributed to their tactical disadvantages during the match.

The concluding match of the series is scheduled for Thursday, also in Dambulla, where Sri Lanka will aim to capitalize on their momentum to clinch the series against the higher-ranked West Indies. Following the T20 series, the teams will participate in a three-match ODI series.

West Indies had previously secured a five-wicket victory in the series opener on Sunday, intensifying the competition for the final match.
