Steve Spurrier Names Top Candidates for Florida’s Head Coach Role
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators are in search of a new head football coach following the firing of Billy Napier earlier this season. Florida, known for its storied football legacy, is now looking to fill a crucial position that has seen many historical coaches in its ranks, including Hall of Famer Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier, who led the Gators from 1990 to 2001, has shared his thoughts on the coaching search in a recent podcast appearance. At 80, Spurrier continues to remain a prominent figure in college football. On the “Another Dooley Noted” podcast, he highlighted two candidates he believes would be “super” fits for the program: Lane Kiffin and Eli Drinkwitz.
“I know Lane Kiffin and I know Eli Drinkwitz,” Spurrier said. “Obviously, either one of those guys would be super if it works out. But it’s a long way from whoever we’re going to get as our coach right now.”
Kiffin, the current Ole Miss head coach, has been spotted in Gainesville recently, raising speculation about his future. He addressed the rumors at a press conference, stating, “Why would I not expect to coach next week? We’re game-planning, we just practiced. I don’t even understand how that would happen.”
Meanwhile, Drinkwitz, the head coach at Missouri, also faced similar inquiries about his future amid Florida’s coaching talks. He emphasized his commitment to Missouri, saying, “All of this stuff is just a distraction. My focus is going to remain on our team and our current situation.”
The Gators will be led by interim coach Billy Gonzales as they prepare to compete against the No. 20 Tennessee Volunteers. As the coaching search unfolds, Spurrier’s insights on Kiffin and Drinkwitz keep them at the forefront of discussions regarding Florida’s next head coach.
