Strategy Inc. Halts Bitcoin Buying Amid $9 Billion Gain Announcement

Tysons Corner, Virginia — Strategy Inc. has stopped buying Bitcoin as of last week, announcing a significant $3.9 billion unrealized gain for the third quarter of 2025. The company’s Executive Chairman, Michael Saylor, revealed this decision on social media, indicating a break in the firm’s typical strategy of purchasing during price rallies.
The firm, known as the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, currently owns 640,031 Bitcoin acquired at an average price of less than $74,000 each. As Bitcoin hovered near its all-time high of $125,000 over the weekend, the value of Strategy’s holdings reached approximately $79 billion.
Saylor highlighted a total gain of $9 billion, which includes both the $3.9 billion from Q3 and an additional $5.8 billion appreciation achieved after the quarter closed. The company also distributed $140 million in dividends across its preferred shares during this period.
According to recent SEC filings, Strategy reported a $1.12 billion deferred tax expense. The carrying value of its digital assets stood at $73.21 billion as of September 30, with tax liabilities totaling $7.43 billion.
This marks the third time this year that Strategy has paused its Bitcoin purchases, coinciding with the end of its quarterly cycles. Analysts suggest this pattern reflects a strategic financial management approach rather than a shift away from Bitcoin as a core asset.
On Monday, shares of Strategy rose 2.8% to $361, having rallied 25% year-to-date, despite dipping to $353.50 in pre-market trading. The company has diversified its funding sources by issuing various types of preferred shares, three of which offer a 10% annualized yield.
Although the firm cited this pause as part of its normal operations, prediction markets had anticipated continued Bitcoin purchases, with odds dropping sharply from 60% to 1% post-announcement. Saylor remarked on social media about the gain, writing, “$9 billion reminder of why we HODL,” referring to the popular crypto term encouraging long-term holding of assets.
Despite market speculation, Strategy continues to emphasize its commitment to Bitcoin as a reserve asset, suggesting potential resumption of purchases aligned with its capital strategy in the future.
