Justin Bingham, the 40-year-old CEO of the software company Opiniion, tragically died after an accidental fall while canyoneering at Zion National Park. Bingham, known for his adventurous spirit and leadership qualities, was on a canyoneering expedition with three friends when the incident occurred.

According to a statement released by Opiniion on October 7, Bingham “was involved in a tragic accident while enjoying one of his greatest passions — exploring the outdoors.” The accident took place on the evening of October 5, 2024, just days before his birthday, despite rescue efforts by more than 50 personnel from various agencies.

Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh expressed condolences, stating in an official announcement, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time.” The Park Service noted that Bingham was exploring near the exit of Heaps Canyon when he accidentally fell between 150 and 200 feet.

The rescue operation involved Zion National Park’s Technical Search and Rescue Team, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue, and Intermountain Life Flight. Efforts included immediate medical attention and an aerial extraction by a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter to a nearby helispot. However, Bingham was pronounced deceased before he could be transported to a hospital via air ambulance.

Opiniion’s co-founder and COO, Devin Shurtleff, remembered Bingham as “the eternal optimist” and a significant figure who “wasn’t just a leader here at Opiniion — he was a mentor, a dad, and a friend to many of us.” The company expressed a commitment to honoring Bingham’s legacy by continuing the work he cherished.

Bingham is survived by his wife Lindsay and their four children. Details of his personal life, including family travels and their son Landon’s treatment for cerebral palsy, were shared through their blog, “Our Life in Holland.” The family has built a substantial following on digital platforms, sharing insights into their lives and travels.

The investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still ongoing, as Zion National Park and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office look into the circumstances that led to Bingham’s fall. The park officials have stressed the importance of safety and the challenges posed by the rugged terrain in canyon areas.
