Three Dead Due to Heat at Indian Air Force Show in Chennai
A massive crowd gathered at Marina Beach in Chennai on Sunday to witness an air show conducted by the Indian Air Force, resulting in a tragic incident where three spectators lost their lives due to dehydration and heat. The victims have been identified as Srinivasan, Karthikeyan, and John. Several others, over a dozen, reportedly fainted and were subsequently admitted to local hospitals for treatment.
The air show marked the celebration of the 92nd Indian Air Force Day, attracting visitors from early morning, eager to watch thrilling displays of fighter aircraft. Despite precautions like carrying umbrellas, many spectators succumbed to the scorching heat as the event unfolded throughout the day.
A police officer reported, “Around a dozen people fainted due to the chaotic crowd situation and the extreme weather conditions at Marina, and they received medical aid at a government hospital.” Additional measures were necessary to clear traffic and ensure ambulances could reach the casualties.
The enormous assembly at both the Lighthouse Metro Station and the Velachery MRTS railway station led to overcrowding, making it challenging for commuters like Sreedhar from Velachery, who struggled to reach his destination with his family due to packed platforms.
In attendance were notable figures such as Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amarpreet Singh, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, various state ministers, and Chennai Mayor R. Priya.
The air show featured performances by about 72 aircraft, including the supersonic Rafale, Tejas, Sukhoi Su-30, and several heritage planes like Dakota. An integral part of the display was a mock hostage rescue operation by the elite Garud Commandos of the Indian Air Force. The grandeur of the show qualified for inclusion in the Limca Book of Records.
Despite the spectacle, the event’s scale highlighted infrastructural challenges. Many criticized the poor logistical planning, citing insufficient water vendors and resultant traffic jams. Responses from local residents offering water were integral in providing relief to distressed attendees.
