Tony Finau Makes Equipment Changes Ahead of FedEx St. Jude Championship

SOUTHWIND, Tennessee – As he aims to advance in the FedExCup Playoffs, Tony Finau is making notable changes to his equipment before the 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship. Finau, who currently ranks 64th in the standings, is looking to break into the top 50 to qualify for the BMW Championship later this month.
The golfer has recently switched out his golf ball and putter in a bid to lower his spin rate, which he observed had increased while using his driver. High spin can hinder both accuracy and distance, especially for a player like Finau, known for his powerful swing.
About a month ago, Finau switched to a Fujikura Ventus Black 7X shaft in his Ping G440 driver, aiming to manage his spin better. This week, he’s introduced a Titleist Pro V1x Double Dot prototype ball, which he believes offers a higher launch and reduced spin.
“I did try the Double Dot, it’s incredible, and it’s going into play right away,” Finau told GolfWRX.com. He noted that the new ball gave him a couple hundred rpms lower spin, a significant improvement heading into this crucial tournament.
Finau is also adjusting his putter. After using a Ping Anser 2D for several years, he experimented with a softer putter found in his garage during the Wyndham Championship last week but found it lacking in distance control.
“We feel like we’re able to have an onset option with some toe hang, so now it matches what his stroke type is,” said Ping putter representative Dylan Goodwin, discussing the new Ally Blue Onset putter Finau is trying. Goodwin added that Finau was pleased with the alignment benefits and overall feel of the new option.
Finau does not typically make drastic changes to his gear, so the effectiveness of these new adjustments will be crucial as he fights to qualify for the next stage of the playoffs.
