ISTANBUL, Turkey — Turkish music icon Edip Akbayram passed away at the age of 75 on Sunday, March 2, 2025. The renowned artist had been receiving treatment for pneumonia at Haydarpaşa Numune Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi and was later admitted to intensive care due to internal bleeding and multiple organ failure.

According to hospital officials, Akbayram, who had been under care since January 4, succumbed to his condition at approximately 7:30 PM local time. The Il Sağlık Müdürlüğü (Istanbul Health Directorate) released a statement expressing condolences to his family and fans, stating, “Despite all medical interventions, our esteemed artist Edip Akbayram has passed away. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, loved ones, and the artistic community.”

Born in Gaziantep in 1950, Akbayram first gained attention as a musician in his youth. His passion for music began early; he contracted polio at nine months old, yet he pursued a career in music, forming a band during high school and releasing his debut single “Kendim Ettim, Kendim Buldum.”

His breakout moment came when he moved to Istanbul in 1968 and later won the prestigious Altın Mikrofon competition in 1971 with his song “Kükredi Çimenler,” inspired by the poetry of Aşık Veysel. He followed up with hits such as “Aldırma Gönül” and “Eşkıya Dünyaya Hükümdar Olmaz,” marking his place in the Turkish music scene.

Despite facing censorship in the 1980s, Akbayram made a successful comeback in the 1990s, with albums like “Türküler Yanmaz” that addressed social issues. His career, spanning over five decades, showcased his commitment to creating music that resonated with the people. Akbayram released more than 20 albums and received over 250 awards throughout his lifetime.

Recognized for his unique voice and heartfelt lyrics, he remains a beloved figure in Turkish culture. His legacy will live on through the numerous songs that have touched the hearts of his fans.
