Tyson Fury Plans Aggressive Strategy for Rematch with Oleksandr Usyk
Tyson Fury, the renowned British heavyweight boxer, is set to adopt a new, aggressive approach in his upcoming rematch against Oleksandr Usyk. This follows Fury’s first professional loss in their initial encounter earlier this year. The rematch is scheduled to take place on December 21 in Saudi Arabia, adding high stakes to what is anticipated to be another thrilling bout.
Promoter Frank Warren, who works alongside Top Rank to promote Fury, has indicated that Fury is keen to avenge his defeat with a knockout victory. “His mentality is he’s got to knock him out to win,” Warren told Sky Sports. “So it’s going to be exciting.” This underscores Fury’s determination to settle the score decisively and reclaim his standing in the heavyweight division.
Fury, who faced criticism for his perceived showboating in the May fight, is expected to make significant adjustments in the rematch. Warren explained that Fury’s focus would be on capitalizing on Usyk’s vulnerabilities, particularly after the Ukrainian appeared fatigued in the later rounds of their previous clash. “He knows what he did wrong,” Warren reflected. “Tyson’s got a great boxing brain and I genuinely believe he’ll come out as the victor.”
The first fight was marked by intense competition and a split decision victory for Usyk, who retained the WBC, WBO, and WBA titles. The judges’ scores were close, with some disagreement among them about the outcome. “I thought I won the fight last time,” Fury has claimed, offering his own scorecard that differed from the official result. Nonetheless, he acknowledges the need to secure a definitive victory in the rematch.
Brad Jacobs, Top Rank’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the importance of the upcoming fight for Fury, who is encountering unfamiliar territory by entering with a loss on his record. “He’s coming in with a loss on his record in his last fight. Usually guys who lose a fight get a couple of easy wins and they come back. He’s going right back in the lion’s den,” Jacobs said, expressing confidence in Fury’s potential to triumph and put any doubts about his career trajectory to rest.
As both fighters prepare intensively, the boxing community is abuzz with anticipation. “Everybody can’t wait for this fight,” stated Warren. “The first fight was probably one of the best heavyweight fights of the 21st century. If it’s half as good as that, we’ll be pleased.”
