Verstappen’s Future Sparks Speculation at Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — Andy Cowell, CEO and Team Principal of Aston Martin, dismissed rumors linking World Champion Max Verstappen to a future with the team during a press conference ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The speculation intensified after Red Bull’s motorsport adviser Helmut Marko expressed concerns about Verstappen’s longevity with the team, stirring discussions within the paddock.
This week, Verstappen’s relationship with Red Bull has dominated conversations, especially as the series enters only its fifth race of the season. Reports surfaced suggesting Aston Martin could be a potential landing spot for the Dutch driver, despite the team having contracts with veteran drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll through at least 2026.
During Friday’s press conference in Jeddah, Cowell highlighted Aston Martin’s current driver lineup, indicating that the team is focused on its present rather than future driver acquisitions. “We’re incredibly fortunate that we’ve got two incredibly experienced drivers signed for the next two years,” Cowell said. “That means I can just focus on trying to help improve the business and the art of making a fast race car.”
When probed about the implications of these comments for Verstappen’s potential future at Aston Martin, Cowell stated, “I’m saying that my head is full of improving the company so that we can make a fast race car for Lance and Fernando.” His remarks suggest that any shift in driver strategy is far from imminent.
Amid the ongoing speculation, Alonso addressed questions regarding a possible partnership with Verstappen, suggesting that while collaboration would be unlikely, it reflects positively on Aston Martin’s trajectory. “This shows the project we’re in, the future that this team has,” Alonso expressed. He emphasized his commitment to the team, stating that as long as he feels competitive, he will continue racing. “But my contract is much longer than my racing career,” he added. “I will stay with this team for many years in a different role.”
With ex-Red Bull designer Adrian Newey transitioning to Aston Martin and Honda set to join the team next year, the dynamic landscape of team affiliations contributes to the ongoing intrigue around Verstappen’s career. However, any potential move to Aston Martin would necessitate a significant reevaluation of the current driver lineup.
