Veteran Bjp Leader George Kurian Appointed To Nda Cabinet

George Kurian, a long-standing member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been unexpectedly appointed to the cabinet of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Born in Kottayam and originally a member of the Janatha Party, Kurian made the switch to the BJP in 1980, a move that drew attention for his Christian background aligning with a right-wing Hindutva organization.

With an impressive political career spanning over four decades, Kurian has held various key roles within the BJP, including positions in Yuvamorcha and the National Commission for Minorities.

Prior to his cabinet appointment, Kurian was well-known in Kerala due to his active involvement in state politics and his frequent television appearances representing the BJP.

He has also served as a core committee member and vice-president of the BJP’s state unit, as well as translating for Prime Minister Modi during his visits to the state.

The speculations about Kurian’s cabinet entry gained momentum following his meeting with PM Modi, highlighting his close ties with the BJP’s central leadership in Delhi.

Kurian’s inclusion in the cabinet is seen as part of the BJP’s strategy to ensure Christian representation, especially after Suresh Gopi‘s significant victory in Thrissur with Christian votes playing a crucial role.

This strategic move echoes a similar attempt in the past with Alphonse Kannanthanam’s ministerial appointment, as the BJP aims to strengthen its presence in Kerala and reach out to the Christian community.

In the 2016 Assembly elections, Kurian contested against Oommen Chandy in Puthupally as a BJP candidate, showcasing his active participation in state politics.

His wife, Annakutty, is a retired Nursing Officer from the Indian Army, adding to his family’s diverse background.
