The Washington Commanders have announced the release of quarterback Sam Hartman from their roster. The decision follows the recovery of backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, as the team re-evaluated their needs at the position. Hartman, aged 25, had joined the Commanders as an undrafted free agent from the University of Notre Dame in the spring.

Initially, Hartman was placed on the practice squad but was later elevated to the 53-man roster after Mariota sustained an injury. With Mariota now fit to return, the Commanders decided to waive Hartman, potentially allowing him to rejoin the team’s practice squad should he not be claimed by another team off waivers.

“With Mariota back healthy, it was a strategic move for our roster,” said a team spokesperson. “We are grateful for Sam Hartman’s contributions and wish him the best in his future endeavors.” As it stands, the Commanders maintain Jayden Daniels as their starting quarterback, alongside Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel, who are also part of the 53-man roster.

Insiders report that the likelihood of Hartman having seen any playing time during the regular season was minimal, owing to his position as the fourth-string quarterback prior to his release. Industry analysts suggest Hartman will likely aim to join another NFL team where he could serve as a valuable depth piece or return to a practice squad environment to further develop his skills.
