Watford Fc Supports Alzheimer's Society's Campaign To Raise Awareness Of Dementia

Watford FC is throwing its full support behind the Alzheimer’s Society’s Support The Supporters campaign, aimed at urging fans to be vigilant for common signs of dementia in their loved ones and take the necessary steps towards a diagnosis. The initiative has garnered the support of various clubs and organizations across the football pyramid, including the Football Association (FA), Premier League, Vanarama National League, and the League Managers Association, all with the objective of creating a future where football remains unforgettable.

Dementia, which is the leading cause of death in the UK, affects one in three people born today in their lifetime. Surprisingly, many still live with undiagnosed dementia due to misconceptions that it is merely a normal part of aging or uncertainty about the symptoms, which often discourages them from consulting a GP.

To aid fans who might have noticed any changes in themselves or their loved ones during the festive period, the Alzheimer’s Society has provided a symptoms checklist and additional information on receiving a diagnosis on their website. An early and accurate diagnosis not only enables access to treatment, care, and support, but also empowers individuals to manage their condition and plan for the future. An Alzheimer’s Society survey revealed that 91% of those affected by dementia recognized the clear benefits of receiving a diagnosis, with many expressing a desire for an earlier diagnosis.

Watford FC is renowned for providing “Golden Memories,” a weekly reminiscence program specifically designed for people living with dementia, accompanied by their carers and loved ones. The program is hosted in the Sensory Room at Vicarage Road Stadium, guiding guests on a journey down the ‘Yellow Brick Road’ through various eras using football, history, and music to evoke personal memories. These sessions are supported by volunteers and entail a wide range of activities such as celebrating Watford FC, reminiscing, guest speakers, displaying football memorabilia, providing respite for carers, monthly excursions, music, dance through the decades, and even chair-based exercise.

Watford’s Golden Memories program operates in partnership with the Premier League, PFA, Watford Borough Council, the Alzheimer’s Society, and Watford Museum. The sessions take place every Monday from 10:30 am to 12 noon. Individuals interested in benefiting from this program or wanting to refer someone can contact Shona at [contact email].

For those living with dementia who require additional support from the club to attend matches, they can reach out to [contact email] with their details, and the Watford FC team will be in touch to discuss assistance options.
