There’s a female serial killer on the loose in Furious, and she’s already making waves. The Hulu original series, which premiered its first three episodes on July 27, follows Alice Black, a former NYPD homicide detective turned FBI agent, as she hunts Catherine, a killer whose victims are wealthy, powerful men. The cat-and-mouse game between the two women is already drawing comparisons to some of the best crime thrillers on television.
Emmy Rossum, who plays Alice, didn’t take the role lightly. She gained 10 pounds of muscle and trained with retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer to prepare for the part. Rossum told PEOPLE in July that she felt lucky to have had a year and a half between the initial idea and stepping on set. “That gift of getting to embed that deeply in the character and have the research and training live within your body, it really is such a gift,” she said.
The show marks a departure for creator Elizabeth Meriwether, known for lighter fare like New Girl and No Strings Attached. But Meriwether told TheWrap that Furious taps into her longtime fascination with “complicated, messy female characters that surprise you.” She added, “I’m interested in characters pushed to their breaking point. I’m interested in human beings at the edge of their humanity and the dysfunction of that.”
If you’re ready to binge, you’ll have to wait a bit. Hulu released the first three episodes all at once, but the remaining five will roll out weekly. New episodes drop Mondays at 12 a.m. ET, leading up to the season finale on Aug. 31. That means the full season will be available just over a month after the premiere.
Meriwether has big plans if Hulu renews the series. “I’m hoping that we get more seasons,” she told TheWrap. “As a huge fan of Law & Order: SVU, I feel like this show kind of exists in that world of like, there’s other cases they can tackle.”
