Romy and Michele Reunite: Sequel Teased at D23 with New Romance Details

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are back together again, and this time they brought updates. The stars of the 1997 cult comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” took the stage at Disney‘s D23 Entertainment Showcase in Anaheim, California, on Friday, giving fans a tantalizing preview of the long-awaited sequel.

“We still own our boutique in Beverly Hills,” Sorvino said, slipping back into her role as Romy White. “It’s, like, really chic,” added Kudrow, who returns as Michele Weinberger. The pair’s on-stage chemistry was immediate, complete with matching color-coordinated outfits that harkened back to the film’s iconic fashion.

But there’s more than haute couture on the horizon for these best friends. Sorvino hinted that romance could be in the cards. “But will we find any?” Kudrow teased. “You’ll just have to watch to find out.” The duo also joked that they can now officially consider themselves Disney princesses, a fitting honor given their new chapter with the House of Mouse.

This appearance comes two months after 20th Century Studios announced that production on the sequel had begun. Back in June, the studio shared a photo of Kudrow and Sorvino sitting in director’s chairs emblazoned with the title “Romy and Michele 2.” The caption read, “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.” Sorvino added her own excitement in the comments, writing, “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!'”

Plans for the follow-up were first announced in January 2025, with both actresses confirmed to return. Tim Federle is directing the sequel, which reunites audiences with Romy and Michele nearly three decades after their memorable trip back to Tucson, Arizona, for their 10-year high school reunion. This time, the plot involves attending a classmate’s wedding, prompting the pair to question whether they have neglected their own romantic lives while focusing on their friendship and careers.

New cast members include Keegan-Michael Key as Michele’s new love interest and Rob Huebel opposite Sorvino’s Romy. Returning favorites include Alan Cumming, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim, and Julia Campbell, with Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham joining the ensemble.

The original film, released in 1997, followed two best friends who returned to their high school reunion determined to impress former classmates by claiming they had invented Post-it Notes. Though it was only a modest box-office performer at the time, it went on to become a cult classic, celebrated for its quirky humor and memorable fashion.
