DiJonai Carrington Questionable for Sky-Fever Rematch After Foot Soreness

DiJonai Carrington sat out Friday’s win over the Golden State Valkyries, but the Chicago Sky haven’t ruled her out for Sunday’s rematch with the Indiana Fever. The veteran guard is listed as questionable with left foot soreness, a lingering issue that forced her to miss practice Thursday and the 73-70 victory Friday.

Coach Tyler Marsh said there was no setback, just the kind of soreness that comes from playing. “She obviously didn’t feel well enough to practice yesterday or to play today, so hopefully she’ll be back on Sunday, but we’ll see,” Marsh said. Carrington’s absence snapped a string of nine consecutive games since her season debut July 30, a return that came after a long recovery from a left foot sprain and two surgeries.

In those nine games, Carrington has averaged 10.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 17.1 minutes per contest. Her impact has been immediate, though nowhere more visible than in the Aug. 8 meeting with Indiana. She scored eight points in four minutes before being ejected for a Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham. The Fever won that game 90-86, and the fallout has kept the rematch firmly on the radar.

Carrington herself seemed to look ahead after the incident, posting “8/23 😁” on social media. Now that date arrives with the Sky (15-22) fighting for a playoff spot and the Fever coming in on the second night of a back-to-back. Indiana visits the New York Liberty on Saturday, while Chicago gets a full day of rest before hosting at Wintrust Arena.

If cleared, Carrington would add a physical perimeter defender and another scoring option against Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. The game tips off at 7 p.m. ET Sunday. Meanwhile, the Sky’s injury report also lists Skylar Diggins as out with a right knee injury, while Aisha Coulibaly has been removed from the list entirely after recovering from her own knee issue.

After Sunday, Chicago hits the road Tuesday to face Brittney Griner and the Connecticut Sun. But first comes the rematch that has simmered for two weeks. Carrington’s status will be the biggest question, and the Sky remain hopeful their guard will be ready for the kind of physical test Indiana tends to bring.
