The Arizona Diamondbacks made a pair of roster moves Saturday morning, selecting right-hander Derek Law’s contract from Triple-A Reno and adding left-hander Mitch Bratt as the 27th man for their doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants. Left-hander Kohl Drake was optioned to Reno in the corresponding move for Law. No 40-man roster move was required, as Arizona had only 39 players on its 40-man.
For Law, this call-up ends a long and winding road back to the majors. The veteran has pitched for six different clubs over eight big-league seasons, but he hasn’t appeared in a major league game since September 2024. He missed all of 2025 due to arm problems, eventually undergoing flexor tendon surgery in July of that year. His return was delayed by another setback in May, and he only got back into game action on August 12, tossing the first of five rehab outings with Reno.
Those five appearances were encouraging. Over 6 1/3 innings with Reno, Law allowed just five hits, no runs, and no walks. That was enough for the Diamondbacks to bring him up to a bullpen that has struggled since the All-Star break, posting a 4.44 ERA that ranks 23rd among the 30 teams.
Law owns a solid career track record, with a 3.69 ERA over 346 innings. He’s never been a high-strikeout arm, but he limits hard contact, holding a career 37.1% hard-hit ball rate. His most recent MLB season was arguably his best: with the Nationals in 2024, he posted a 2.60 ERA with an elite chase rate and a 48.5% ground-ball rate over 90 innings. Arizona would gladly take something close to that as it chases a wild-card spot.
Entering Saturday’s action, the Diamondbacks sat half a game behind the San Diego Padres for the final National League wild-card berth. Every bullpen arm matters now.
Bratt, meanwhile, will start the second game of the twin bill. With Michael Soroka (shoulder) and Zac Gallen (elbow) unavailable, Arizona needed an extra starter for the doubleheader. The 23-year-old Bratt has pitched fairly well recently for the big club, turning in a 3.38 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 24 innings across his last five MLB starts. He figures to return to Reno once the day’s games are completed.
