The gaming world is no stranger to leaks, but this week has been particularly messy for two of the industry’s most anticipated RPGs. Kingdom Hearts IV and Persona 6 have both apparently had their secrets spilled through the same unlikely culprit: Steam achievements.
For Kingdom Hearts IV, Square Enix has been carefully rolling out details about Sora’s next adventure. The game was recently announced for Switch 2 at a Nintendo Direct, with a day-and-date release alongside other platforms sometime in 2027. Sora will explore the mysterious city of Quadratum and revisit many familiar Disney worlds. Now, however, a spotted list of Steam achievements has leaked far more than the publisher likely intended.
The achievement list reportedly reveals new worlds and other story elements that were clearly meant to be a surprise. Square Enix and Disney probably had a very specific marketing plan in place, and this leak throws a significant wrench into those carefully laid plans.
Meanwhile, Atlus is dealing with a similar headache. The company has shown virtually nothing of Persona 6, leaving fans to speculate on everything from its release window to its cast. A brief teaser trailer gave little away. Then Exophase, a database that tracks achievements and trophies across PlayStation, PC, and Xbox, published what it claims are complete achievement lists for both Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6. That second list is particularly puzzling, since no actual in-game footage of Persona 6 has ever been shown.
The Persona 6 achievements allegedly contain descriptions of the game’s story beats, which some might consider a major spoiler hazard. For a game that is still just a title and a teaser, this is an extraordinary amount of exposure.
The leak also raises questions about the game’s development timeline. If an achievements list already exists, could Persona 6 be closer to release than fans think? That’s speculation, of course. Some observers suggest a fall 2027 launch isn’t impossible, though nothing is confirmed.
Kotaku reached out to Atlus for comment, and any response will presumably be shared. Square Enix has not yet publicly addressed the Kingdom Hearts IV Steam leak either. For now, players who want to avoid spoilers should probably steer clear of browsing achievement databases.
