Thunder Secure First Conference Finals Appearance Since 2016

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Denver Nuggets 125-93 in Game 7 on Sunday, marking the franchise’s first trip to the Western Conference finals since 2016. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 35 points in a game filled with high tensions and key performances.
Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his nervousness before the game, a rarity for him as a star player. “I was nervous, to be honest,” he said. “Just knowing what was on the line… If you don’t bring your A-game, it could all be over. But I think that nervousness motivated me.”
Initially, the Thunder struggled, missing 10 of their first 15 shots. The Nuggets capitalized on their shaky start, leading 21-10 early in the first quarter. Aaron Gordon played despite a Grade 2 hamstring strain, adding 8 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
Gordon’s determination impressed his teammates. Jamal Murray commented, “He gave us more than I think we all could ask for.” Following minor setbacks, Oklahoma City rallied and outscored the Nuggets 60-46 by halftime, fueled by an 18-5 run in the final three minutes of the second quarter.
Thunder forward Jalen Williams contributed significantly, scoring 11 points during that crucial run. He expressed a mix of nerves and excitement, saying, “You never know how many Game 7s you’re going to get. It’s an opportunity to be great.” The Thunder’s offensive strategy adjusted successfully against the Nuggets’ zone defense, breaking through with a shooting percentage of 45% in Game 7.
Defensively, Oklahoma City made key adjustments, employing a six-foot-five Caruso against Nuggets star Nikola Jokic. He limited Jokic’s effectiveness throughout the game. “It’s a lot of hard work,” Caruso said. “He’s a phenomenal player… it’s just about competing and being relentless with my energy.”
Despite the loss, Nuggets interim head coach David Adelman praised Gordon’s effort while discussing team dynamics. After the game, Adelman remained non-committal about his future, noting, “It’s not the appropriate time for me to think about that.”
Fans witnessed the Thunder’s growth as a team throughout the series, showcasing their resolve and determination. The franchise looks forward to the Western Conference finals, where they aim to continue their winning ways.
